These are all common objects photographed at the Falls of the Ohio on a single cold day in January 2011.

An interesting array of frozen debris! The ice actually enhances the blue bottle top and gives it an air of mystery, like its been there for some time and is just emerging. Whilst the tyre and the shoe give the impression they’ve been newly dumped. The strangest one – I think, is the the bucket and what looks like frozen paint – very strange! Enigmatic pictures Al!
I love enigmas! Your observation on the blue bottle cap is an apt one. I have been playing around for the past couple of months with a new series just on literal bottlenecks. I’m still not sure how to present it though. Sorry for the late reply, I’ve had the flu all week and have missed work, etc… Today is the first day I have checked in on the old Riverblog.
Hi Al. I find it interesting how you’ve centered each object in each photograph. Your presentation is like a slide show of scientific documentation–llike–“Here are my fossils all in a row for evidence.”
The water stills
shoes and tires
freeze frame
The lack of styrofoam figure animation is striking. Its absence highlights all they bring to these journeys.
I guess these photos are presented as both documentation and art. The ice is another variable that changes the context of the ordinary things we think we all know. Because there is so much going on all the time around here, it’s nice to take a break from the Styrofoam every once in awhile. Thanks Eva, that snow storm you had yesterday is here today.
As for the snow, you’re welcome, Al. Btw, there may be MORE where that came from. Oh yeah.
Featured like this, I think of our trash that we are continually not responsible enough to dispose of properly.
