Here’s a collection of found objects that I photographed on location at the Falls of the Ohio State Park. All form a theme centered around transportation in the form of mostly discarded toys. I found all this stuff by the side of the river during the past year. Since the theme is obvious, I’ll just let the photos speak for themselves. Let’s start with another boat. It’s not the “Titanic” or the wreck of the ” Edmund Fitzgerald” but it bore witness to forces in nature larger than itself.

I love this group of images. There’s something about those first three, covered in sand, bleached by the sun, and disappearing into the environment… they are particularly beautiful.
These are great Al! My favorite has got to be the Wagon. It brings back memories of ‘Little House on the Prairie’ or a very old series called ‘Wagon train’ about the adventures of the pioneers crossing America. Here is a wagon that has fallen into the river – literally:) I bet if you dug deep enough there probably remains of those old wagon trains in that river. Interesting post Al!
Thanks Y’all! I like the images that are sinking into the sand as well. The covered wagon I believe is an Avon bottle and is made of glass. I wonder what was in it…some mule skinner musk?
Hhah! An Avon bottle! Can you imagine the Ad? ‘She’s wearing…..’Mule Skinner’ by Avon….and EVERYONE is noticing!’ hilarious:)
Hey Al, Nice photo set. I too was provoked to comment by the wagon in particular. It was striking to me because of how ‘American’ it is – it would be quite rare to see such a toy here in Australia (though I now see this one isn’t a toy – i’ll carry through my argument anyway). Interesting how much we use toys to teach children our history, stories, myths, cultural identity etc etc. Since American culture has been so widely influential internationally through television, I can easilly identify the covered wagon as signifying the whole pushing into the frontier story. Here the history of colonising towards the interior has it’s parralells, and yet the story is told quite differently and there is certainly no eqivelent iconography based around the transport used.
Hi Pete, Thanks for the nice comment. What kinds of things come to mind when you think of Australia as a colony?
